The areas of the lumbar spine that could be affected are:

  • The vertebrae or bones of the spine
  • The disc between the vertebra
  • The nerves that exit between the vertebrae

Some of the more common cause of back pain arise from the joints themselves. They can become swollen and irritated affecting the nerve tissue and also affecting the joint itself.

The joint has the unique ability to refer pain all the way down into your foot just as the spinal nerve would if it’s getting pinched

You can also have irritation from the disc if it bulges or herniates irritating other tissues in the region.

You can have pain from the bones, the joints, the disc or the muscles that support and move that particular region.

There are a number of reasons for back pain that can be found by performing thorough examination.

The common causes of back pain can be affected such as the bone, the nerve, the disc, the muscle or the joints.

Through manipulation we can affect the joints in such a fashion to inhibit the muscle spasm in the area particularly the muscles that support and move the joint through it’s range of motion

We can also help to open up the hole where the nerve comes out through manipulation helping to give the nerve more room and motion to diminish the nerve irritation.

With manipulation we can also effect the integrity of the disc helping to reposition the disc and the nucleus which sits inside the disc so that pain is lessened significantly.

Spinal manipulation can also affect the mechanical stability of the spine by influencing the muscles that support and move the entire spinal structure as a unit as opposed to one single area.

These are some of the ways chiropractic spinal manipulation can help decrease the pain of the lumbar spine.
